European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
